Forward Deployed Engineer – Engineering (PLM/CAD) (m/f/d)
Remote in Germany

When companies have tried to automate variant creation in the past, it often turned into multi-year programs: strategy consultants, engineering service providers, IT contractors. Analyze processes, stack workshop after workshop, select software, roll it out, customize endlessly—and then try to integrate everything through one-off development. It took years, cost millions, and in the end users were still unhappy and the level of automation remained low. wailand flips that. We start small, automate step by step where it actually makes sense, integrate existing systems pragmatically—and build toward end-to-end automation over time. “IT” alone isn’t enough for that. You need engineering understanding, product logic, and systems thinking. That’s exactly why you’re here.
Your mission
You work with customers to capture the domain requirements in their variant creation process—and you challenge them with your engineering expertise: what’s truly necessary, and what delivers measurable cycle-time reduction?
Together with the customer, you prioritize what gets automated next—pragmatically, step by step, with a clear focus on impact.
You translate product logic (product structures, variant rules, change processes, releases/approvals) into concrete workflows and knowledge graphs on our platform.
Together with your technical counterpart—the Forward Deployed Engineer (Software)—you implement these workflows directly on our platform.
You are the link between customer and product team: you bring back the key learnings and help turn them into platform improvements that get the next customer moving faster.
What you bring
Several years of experience in the PLM and/or CAD ecosystem (e.g., at a PLM vendor, a system integrator, or in industry).
Deep understanding of:
Product structures
Variant management
Configuration logic
Change management
Engineering data models
Ideally, you have hands-on experience in design engineering or day-to-day engineering work—you know the reality behind the data.
You know first-hand why traditional PLM implementations take years—and why “more customization” isn’t the answer.
You understand the limitations of classic relational data models in engineering contexts—and you’re excited to build better approaches.
You understand that many companies don’t have PLM—not because they don’t know about it, but because existing systems often don’t fit them.
You don’t want to defend another legacy system. You want to build something that genuinely helps European industry.
You have strong IT affinity and want to deeply understand how systems work together—not just conceptually, but technically.
You can work with interfaces, data flows, and data models (APIs, imports/exports, events—depending on the system landscape).
You’re excited to dive deep into our platform and build solutions that don’t just “save one customer,” but make the platform better overall.
You think in reusable building blocks—not one-off project work.
If you’ve been watching for years how much time and money disappears into variant programs—and you want to do it radically better: start small, deliver fast, automate step by step, and ultimately win end-to-end—then we should talk.
Email us at career@wailand.io. No cover-letter clichés—just tell us what PLM/CAD reality you’ve lived, what you’ve been fighting with, and why you believe wailand can solve it better.
We believe diverse teams make better decisions and build stronger systems. That’s why we welcome people with different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. What matters to us is competence, ownership, and attitude—regardless of gender, origin, religion, sexual identity, age, or disability.
